Health & Safety Committee Meeting -Department
of Recreation
June 12, 2008
AGENDA
- Review of the minutes from the meeting of May 15,
2008 and follow-up on tabled items.
- If possible, we would like to meet the new Commissioner
and hear her views on department health and safety
and the direction she wants to take the department
- Monthly update on incidents of violence at Rec
Centers since last meeting
- Security Policies – Our committee members were
very pleased with the policies you generated and did
not have additions, except that it occurred to us that
perhaps the conducting of monthly fire drills might be
a good addition to the “Daily Operations” policy
(even though it isn’t technically a daily activity.)
- Pool Security – We would like to see an
additional policy developed that lists a few specific
security actions
to be taken that would deal with the same kinds of
hazards and threats you laid out in the overall Violent
Security
Policy when they occur in a pool area. These should
be posted outside at the pool. Some suggestions we
have
include:
- Demonstration of a gun or knife – sound
the alarm/blow the whistle; evacuate
the pool and quickly usher everyone outside
the
fenced
area; lock the gate and get staff inside
- Hearing
gun shots – evacuate the pool
and have everyone lie prone on the
pool deck until the threat passes
- Gun wound, stabbing
or a physical fight – Simultaneously,
1 PMA evacuates the pool and pool area; the
second PMA contacts the Facility Supervisor,
if s/he isn’t already on the pool
deck; one lifeguard assists the injured
person with
first aid; the second lifeguard calls
911; if other lifeguards are present,
they assist
with the evacuation and clearing the
way for ambulance access.
